INDUSTRIAL STORMWATER PERMITTING AND COMPLIANCE SERVICES

Material handling and storage activities at industrial sites are often conducted in open areas that are exposed to precipitation. The resulting runoff transports pollutants such as oil, grease, solvents, metals, and sediment, from these areas into nearby creeks, lakes, streams, or rivers. Pollution of stormwater runoff creates significant water quality problems for our nations waters.

In 1972 the US EPA introduced the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit program. The NPDES program was authorized by the Clean Water Act and has resulted in significant improvements in surface water quality.

In order to reduce the impact of stormwater discharges from industrial facilities, the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) and the US EPA have developed regulations that require many industrial facilities to permit the stormwater discharges associated with manufacturing and storage activities through the NPDES program. These regulations also require preparation of a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) for industrial facilities to describe best management practices (BMPs) that will be used to prevent or minimize pollutant migration through stormwater runoff. Our personnel have many years of experience in preparation of NPDES permit applications and SWPPPs for industrial facilities.

In many cases NPDES regulations also require collection of samples from runoff for laboratory analysis monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually, depending upon the permit requirements. Our personnel have assisted many industrial and transportation clients with sample collection and preparation of monitoring reports for submittal to regulatory agencies.
